I made these simple ribbed arm warmers, and a beanie hat from 2 skeins of Noro Silk Garden. I made up the patterns as I went along. The yarn is self-striping and was pretty enough that I didn't have to incorporate any fancy lace or cabling.

If you really need a pattern, here it is.
ARM WARMERS
With 5.0 mm dpns, cast on 32 sts. I actually use a 3.75 mm size, but I must knit very loosely as the gauge matches those of patterns that call for 5.0 mm needles. Anyway, don't worry too much about the size for this project - the ribbing will shrink or expand to fit your arm.
Work in k2, p2 ribbing up to where the meaty part of your thrumb starts.
After a p2 section, k1, pm, m1, pm, k1. Continue around with the ribbing.
When you get to the marker, slm, kfbf (so that you've made 3 sts in one), slm. Now the hard part is done.
Continue around with the ribbing, but when you get to the marker, slm, kfb, k to last st before 2nd marker, kfb, slm. Keep doing this until you have about 12-15 sts between the markers, whatever you think will fit around your thumb.
On the next round, place the thumb sts on a stitch holder. Work the remaining sts in ribbing, binding off loosely in pattern when you reach the desired length.
Place the thumb sts on the needles, and knit 2-3 rounds, then 2 rounds of k1, p1 ribbing. You may pick up 1-2 sts where the thumb meets the rest of the arm warmer to avoid having a hole to sew up later. Bind off loosely in pattern. Weave in all ends. Block it if you like.
BEANIE
With 5.0 mm dpns, cast on 72 sts. I actually use a 3.75 mm size, but I must knit very loosely as the gauge matches those of patterns that call for 5.0 mm needles. Anyway, don't worry too much about the size for this project - the ribbing will shrink or expand to fit your head.
Knit several rows of k2, p2 ribbing. Whenever you feel like it, switch to plain knitting. When you're near the top, start decreasing: (k8, k2 tog) across. Then (k7, k2tog) across. Then (k6, k2tog) across, etc., until you have 9 sts left. Cut the yarn, thread it through a needle, and run the needle through the last sts, pulling tightly and knotting. Pull the knot to the inside of the hat and secure it by weaving in the end. Weave in all ends. Block it if you like.
