Too Hot, Not Much Happening
The whole week has been unusually hot. It's been in the mid-30s Celsius everyday, but feels like low 40s with the humidity. As a result, we haven't been doing much except swimming in the in-laws' pool. The oldest can swim without support (e.g. water-wings) and is working on building up endurance. The youngest started swimming by himself today. I still need to float alongside him wearing a PFD in case he panics or needs a rest, but otherwise he's doing well.
Last Friday we took our aikidoka friend AK out for a farewell dinner. He's off to Japan at the end of July and will live there between 1-3 years teaching English.
This past Tuesday was my nephew's second birthday. Here he is with his dad. This is one of his first pieces of art work.

Yesterday my sister and I went out to dinner with my parents. My mom is getting quite anxious and excited about her trip to London, even though the departure is still two weeks away.
I've acquired some new reads. I'm going to see if growing native plants in parts of the yard will make my lawn healthier and easier to maintain, hence, 100 Easy to Grow Native Plants. The other book, Everything I Ate, is just that - everything the author ate in 2004.

I'm oddly fascinated by this one. He lives in New York city so mercifully there's lots of variety in what he eats. I'm particularly intrigued by the small snatches of detail that creep into the photos, whether they are included intentionally or not. Some of the food is clearly "posed", like a baked good perched on a snowy fence. Some of it is not, and you can tell by the poor lighting or distracting junk in the background. So far, I'm guessing that the author is gay (he watches Golden Girls every night with a bowl of cereal), is a Democrat (there's a photo from an anti-Bush rally and another taken at a pre-election Democratic bake sale fundraiser), lives with a roommate named Danny, hangs around with a lesbian couple who have a son named Henry, was raised in New England (possibly Maine) and works at Time Inc. It's an engrossing read. I'm reading it like a novel, page by page, in sequence starting from January 1.

What I'm snackng on myself these days are these treats.

The boys have taken to wearing a Batman and Darth Vader costume around all the time. I would've snapped photos, but ehhh - it's been too hot to chase after them.
