Happy Birthdays

It was my 39th birthday on Friday, so I treated myself to a few gifts. The first are tiny clay sushi stitch markers, which I ordered from Sara, a fellow Asian Knitters Ring blogger who I met through a Craftster swap (I sent her a brooch and magnets and she sent me a knitting kit).

On Saturday, I got to combine my favourite hobbies, aikido and knitting, because the Downtown Knit Collective's Annual Knitters' Frolic was held at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, where my dojo is. After the women's aikido class, I browsed the latest knitting books and shopped for yarn. I didn't take photos while there, but I found some pictures at other blogs here and here.

I picked up some Brown Sheep Company Cotton Fleece from the Knit Cafe booth, to make "Squarey" (the pillow) from the Jess Hutchison pattern book. I also got three skeins of Briggs and Little Heritage, in purple, green and natural colours. I love the Briggs and Little. Not only was it inexpensive, but it's 100% wool that isn't far removed from the sheep. It smells like lambs and rather than being put off, I find the bits of hay clinging to it rather charming.

Here's the Briggs and Little being wound into a ball. Even though I've got at least three other projects on the go already, I've started knitting the felted bag shown in the magazine with the green and natural skeins. I've got plans for the purple too, but I'll have to wait to see how this yarns felts up.

This is two huge skeins of Fleece Artist Blue Face Leicester, which I fear are the beginnings of a stash. I never buy high-end yarn - never mind 1800 metres of it! - without a specific project in mind, but I fell for these because of the superior quality (hand-dyed, made-in-Nova-Scotia, 100% wool) and the discounted price.

Oh, and it was the hubby's birthday on Sunday. He's the big four-oh. Happy birthday, Spousal Unit!
